Moyo worried by disgruntled workers

He told the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President Sarah George that there appear to be demotivated civil servants, including Permanent Secretaries working in government.

Moyo said civil servants are always moved from one level to another, with some working on one to two year contracts.'There is no continuity and stability; this is something that we are not used to. You are shifting them around. They complain in the corridors,' said Moyo.

Moyo also asked George when the issue of teachers' overtime would be resolved.Responding to Moyo's concerns, George said: 'In progressive civil service all over the world, public servants work on contract.'She said it is advantageous for public servants to work on contracts because it allows them to perform. She conceded that working on contract is a fairly new concept in Botswana, so people are worried. 'Change is a process,' she said.About the teachers' working conditions, she said it is not her department's responsibility.
