DJ NT Base aims for the stars

The 24-year-old says he fell in love with music at a tender age.'Our family house was next to the busiest night club at Mahalapye, and every night I could not sleep because of the noise. With time, I got used to the music and I eventually became inspired to be a DJ,' he said.  NT Base tells Showbiz that he started recording music on empty tapes and played them on two radios at home, trying to mix until he got the concept right. He perfected his skill until finally, he reached a stage where he was juggling both being a DJ and attending school as a form three student.

A couple of years later, the young lad met with DJ Lenty who he says has always been his mentor. 'Lenty then introduced me to Dj'ing at another level and in 2007, I landed a DJ slot on Yarona FM on the then popular weekend night show called Kazilamlaobitsa hosted by  M'crenco. I got through it by being the longest dominating DJ on a weekly held live DJ battles where the public voted for their favourite,' he says. This, he says, is how he gained recognition in Gaborone. He later teamed up with other well known DJs, Jam-n-I and P-stah, as VIB DJ's and signed under the label, VIB Music. The label released this trio's first album dubbed; VIB Unlimited Volume 1 in 2011, which did really well in the market.

When questioned why he choose to be a DJ out of so many careers, he promptly says: 'I would not say I choose it, but rather I feel this art choose me because I had a rich music background that needed to be shared with people and the only way to share this talent was through me being a DJ.' When NT Base is on the decks, he says it is like undergoing a stress relieving exercise and makes him happy. He believes music has the power to heal wounds and is motivated by the crowd's reaction every time he plays.'It gives me a sense of pride to know the impact I have in their lives through music and for that, I have never in my life received negative feedback from anyone and I mostly get encouraging critics,' he says. Young as he is, he has already shared a stage with big names including Rocco, Ralf Gum, DJ Fresh and Mafikizola. Locally he has played alongside the house DJ entourage, House Junkies. What sets NT Base apart from the rest, he says, is his rich music background and understanding of music.

'People at times are surprised during my set, I play music that was popular long before my time, but it all boils down to my rich understanding of music and the way I mix,' he says. Apart from Dj'ing NT Base is a sound engineer by profession and a producer who draws his inspiration from good music. 'I listen deep into a song, the emotions it carries and then I picture myself playing it and how people will respond to it, all that inspires me and through this talent, I will continue to rock and give people a great time,' he concludes.
