Pay-slip in pocket, man commits suicide

The commander of Gaborone Central Police Station, Superintendent Modisaotsile Bonang said the 22-year old man was spotted by a police officer who was en-route to Old Naledi Police Station. The officer was about to take a taxi to work when she spotted the dead man hanging from a tree by the roadside. She immediately reported the matter to her colleagues. 'According to our preliminary investigations, he may have committed suicide in the morning,' said Bonang. The police suspect that the 22-year old was a government employee from a pay-slip found in his pocket.

Bonang said the man used a belt and shoelaces to hang himself. Some officers at the scene said the deceased is a Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldier but Bonang would not immediately confirm the claim. One of the officers stated that the pay-slip was from BDF.

According to an unidentified resident of Maruapula BHC flats, they learnt that there was a corpse hanging from a nearby tree when they heard a lot of noise from curious members of the public who had watched the police collecting the body. The resident said that she was still shocked by the incident as the man hanged himself at a tree next to her house. It was her first time to see a dead body hanging from a tree. It appears that the man was not a resident of Maruapula as most people from the area did not recognise him.
