My Star aspirants fail to impress judges

The remaining eight on Friday left the judges with little to say as they failed to deliver in the test of their skills as singers, performers and even as song writers. Many of the contestants failed in the task to write their own lyrics and deliver a melody for a dance song. Despite many of them writing catchy and interesting lyrics not much could be said about how they interpreted the song on stage. It was either too many lyrics or too little, making the song long or monotonous and consequently boring.

This could mean contestants missing on their dream if they continue to struggle to master the craft of task song, as the judges are now concentrating on that. This simply means that no matter how fabulous and good the contestants have been performing in the past few weeks, one is as good as their last performance hence they should up their game at each task.

With Wendy gone after having to battle with her partner Khumo in most of the duets' performances that they have delivered, the show now remains with three girls - while the boys are five.It remains to be seen if Khumo who missed the exit door together with Gaone and Hailey are going to do well enough to challenge the boys, Vusi, Kagiso, Ontefetse, Noah and Tebogo to remain in the competition, or the grand finale will be an all-boys' affair.Hailey, Vusi, Tebogo and Kagiso are no doubt considered vocally strong in the competition, not to say they are above the rest.  Noah having that X factor on stage is improving each week and is surely in for the long haul together while Gaone has found her ground now although she started out shaky, shy and a bit reserved even though it was not her first time on the show.

Ontefetse is predisposed to singing female artists' songs such as Whitney Houston's - maybe it is because he knows that when it comes to transition in songs, especially the high notes, no contestant comes close to him, which is what the judges and audience like about him.Khumo, who seems the youngest of them all, might be the dark horse of the competition if they don't watch out for her, either way even if she leaves the show she still has the chance to come back for any of the coming seasons a much stronger competitor.

Her duet with Wendy for Destiny's Child's 'Girl' was spot on as were Hailey and Noah, when they took the audience back in time with Dilemma by Nelly and Kelly Rowland. The VOT, as they are affectionately called by their supporters, Vusi, Ontefetse and Tebogo failed to impress on the night though they have been good while Kagiso and Gaone beautifully sang Superhuman by Chris Brown and Keri Hilson.

Though impressed on this aspect, the judges however advised the contestants to work on their communication and chemistry on stage for duets and triple. The race is on for the top five and it remains to be seen if the girls are bold enough to push through the guys and hold their fort for the coming weeks.
