Police nab second Rakops fugitive

The two re-arrested escapees hail from Rakops while the ones still at large are from Boteti and Maun respectively.One is facing an armed robbery charge while his accomplice is wanted for shop breaking.

After the escape, the police launched a massive manhunt for the four men. Rakops Police Station commander, Assistant Superintendent, Onneetse Dumelang has said they apprehended the second fugitive on Monday while he was on his way to Letlhakane magistrate's court.

'He told us that after he and the other fugitives ran from police custody, he went to Maun where he stayed for a couple of days and later went to Moremaoto where he spent a night.He also told us that he left Moremaoto on Monday by half-past-five in the morning by bus and headed for Letlhakane.  Furthermore he said when he arrived in Moremaoto, he slept at the home of people he knew.  On his way to Letlhakane we were informed that he was on the bus,' he said.

He stated that the 28-year-old man is facing a charge of armed robbery and he is a danger to the community.Dumelang said they were glad they managed to re-arrest the man who has since been transferred to Maun Prison.'As for the two who are still at large, the fugitive who hails from Boseja ward in Maun is also dangerous and the community should also be alert at all times,' he said.  The Boseja ward fugitive is said to be in Maun.

'He is also wanted for numerous other crimes which include armed robbery and he should not be out there in the streets.  The other one whose whereabouts are unknown hails from Mosanga ward in Rakops.  He is connected with the crimes of store-breaking together with the fugitive we first caught,' Dumelang said.  He added that the two face charges of stealing money amounting to P22,800 from shops in Rakops.

Meanwhile, Dumelang said they are swamped with increasing cases of stock theft and defilement in the village. He warned male residents to refrain from sexually abusing children.  'These people should know that the law forbids defilement and anyone charged with the offence could spend 10 years in prison if found guilty,' he said.
