Kgatleng RAD students join university

The total number of beneficiaries mobilised and assessed for various Poverty Eradication packages in the district has reached 237 of which 185 were registered for alternative packages and 52 for agricultural and wildlife packages.

The council has delivered services to 4,507 registered clients. Of these 1,273 are destitute, 879 are needy students, 1,470 are orphans, 800 are cost sharing, 20 are in community home based care and 165 are children in need of care. The children are assisted through the provision of social safety nets and other basic needs. The Ministry of Education has introduced sponsorship for tertiary education for students under the social welfare programmes such as orphans and needy students with a minimum of 29 points.

According to the ministry, the candidates must have completed their Form Five in 2011 and 2012. The ministry says that students have to secure admissions themselves and then go to the social and community development office for sponsorship. To date, 25 students in Kgatleng District have been assisted and admitted in various tertiary education institutions. About P58,500 was disbursed to the district for purchase of livestock for some Remote Area Dwellers in Kgomodiatshaba. Three beneficiaries have been identified and will be provided with five heifers. The civic leaders were informed that the quotations for the same are still at the adjudication stage and that the provision is to cater for one bull to be shared by three beneficiaries.

Moreover, the council has received P90,000 to construct a house for beneficiaries in Kgomodiatshaba. It has received P71,428 for reviving the Kgomodiatshaba poultry project. Under the Ipelegeng programme in 2013-2014, 128 projects are being implemented ranging from labour intensive works to technical jobs. The project commenced in April 2013 except for technical ones, which are awaiting procurement of materials and engagement of builders.

All technical projects are anticipated to be done before the end of November 2013. Twenty-seven spillover projects from 2012-2013 financial year are also ongoing and are expected to be complete before the end of July 2013.Ipelegeng in Kgatleng has already employed 1,462 people as April 30, 2013. Most of the people employed are females. According to records 1,317 females are employed in the project while only 145 men have signed up.In the current  financial year, government has allocated extra employment quota for non-rotational beneficiaries country-wide. Kgatleng has been allocated 77 and the slots have already been distributed across the district.
