BCL Mine to hand over resource centre

Former president, Festus Mogae will be the main guest at the official handover ceremony. The P1 million-plus resource centre was constructed through the fundraising efforts of the BCL Mine.  The school has a special education unit, which caters for pupils living with disabilities such as autism, visual impairment, speech, and language and learning difficulties.

Molosankwe told Mmegi this week that BCL constructed the centre in collaboration with its employees through the company's social responsibility investment programme that is meant to assist vulnerable members of the society.

He explained that among others, the centre needs transport and mobility services, an equipped resource room, occupational therapy equipment and therapy equipment. He added that the learners need hearing aids and orthopedic shoes.

Molosankwe said BCL identified Joseph Anderson as a beneficiary for 2011. He explained that the project was started with a fund-raising dinner, which netted more than P500,000.  The fund-raising was divided into two parts -selling dinner tickets and donation of one annual leave day pay by employees.

Ticket sales raised P235,000 and leave days netted P230,000. Debswana Mining Company donated P40,000 to the charity event.  Molosankwe said the event, which was the first of its kind by BCL was influenced by the spirit of creating sustainable communities. It was meant to comply with the mineÕs initiatives in the area of community development.'The mine intends to assist charity organisations and community programmes in an endeavour to uplift Selebi-Phikwe and the entire region,' said Molosankwe.
