Oteng won gold in Casablanca, Morocco, last month to become the only boxer to qualify for the London 2012 global showpiece. The revamped performance based incentives scheme launched earlier this year came into effect at the beginning of April. Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) President Michael Moroka received the cheque for Oteng who is already in Cuba to start preparations for the Olympics.
Handing over the cheque, BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng congratulated the 22-year-old for being the first athlete to win the country a first continental gold this year. He said the incentive scheme was introduced as a way of encouraging athletes to work extra hard as well as to show recognition for their efforts when representing the country.
The BNSC ischeme rewards athletes based on their performance at regional, continental, international and Olympic levels.
Still yesterday, the BNSC launched its strategy project. The deputy Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture (MYSC) Peter Mongwaketse officially launched the project. With barely a month before the end of Sports Vision 2012 in July, Mongwaketse said it was imperative to have a strategy that 'will guide Botswana sports into the future'. He said sport plays an increasingly important role in human development and the launch is a major milestone as the ministry hopes to use sports as a tool to enhance lives of everyone in the community. The strategy, dubbed Beyond 2012, will be developed by a team of experts who have both knowledge and experience in strategy formulation and corporate governance, among other aspects.
Mongwaketse also introduced the team that is chaired by Moreetsi Bogosi of BNSC. Other members are: Steady Bosupang, Daniel Molaodi, Jacob Sesinyi, Ashford Mamelodi and Wanetsha Mosinyi. Mongwaketse said the team has already started work on the strategy and they are confident that they will do a competent job. The team's major task will be to review and develop the Sports Vision 2012 document. A local consultancy company, E-Knowledge, will be assisting in development of the strategy. More details on the strategy will be unveiled at a strategy development workshop in Palapye on June 27-30.
