GCC to retain Mayor, deputy

While there has been a change of guard in some councils around the country, Gaborone City Council (GCC) is expected to retain Haskins Nkaigwa as mayor along with his deputy, Florence Shagwa, in the mayoral elections tomorrow.

Spokesperson of the opposition caucus at the GCC, Moselewapula councillor Ndiwaani Kenosi, said they will nominate and re-elect the duo of Nkaigwa and Shagwa. Nkaigwa is a Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) councillor for Babusi ward while Shagwa is a BCP councillor for Government ward.

'We will not let the talks affect our agreement to work together as a team. Our intention is to do all we can to lead and develop the capital city because the BDP has failed. We will work together as the opposition collective until 2014,' he said.

GCC has 35 councillors. The opposition has 20 councillors;  BMD (11),  BCP (8) and the Botswana National Front (1).  The ruling Botswana Democratic Party has 15 councillors. All Gaborone council committees are chaired and deputised by opposition councillors.
