Sports View unveils invitational races plan

'We are planning to have invitational races in Botswana like in Europe. We invite guys from Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The race is run on an invitational basis. We pick the best athletes for each race,' Dube told Mmegi Sport.

The club will officially launch the initiative at the Tlokweng College of Education (TCE) on Monday afternoon.Dube said preparations for the maiden event were already at an advanced stage. He said that they have identified athletes who are currently doing well internationally for the April event.

'Most of the athletes we are targeting are training in South Africa (since it is nearer and cost effective). We will be going there on March 22. We plan to have the first race on April 14 in Gaborone at the UB Stadium,' he said. The former Botswana 800 metres runner revealed that they have made an arrangement with the organisers of the Yellow Pages Track and Field Series in South Africa to market the race there.

Dube believes the race will help athletes improve their times and enable them to qualify for big events like the Olympic Games. Montsho, who has done extremely well on the international scene, will be expected to take part in the 400 metre race. Dube said there would be no heats at this event. There will be one racing activity for each of the categories.

Sport View has produced some of Botswana's finest athletes in the mould of Montsho, Dube, Ndabili Bashingile and 2009 All Africa Games gold medallist, California Molefe.
