Rugby union secures UB stadium but finance remains a challenge

While the tournament was scheduled to be hosted at UB stadium there was confusion as to what was going to happen on the 25th, as the venue was unavailable on the day. Initially the venue was going to be used by the Department of Student Placement and Welfare (DSPW) for registration of new students.

However, BRU president, Bob Lekan told Mmegi Sport this week that they have negotiated with the UB management and have secured the venue for the full tournament. He also said that preparations for the event are at an advanced stage. The team is also in camp and has played Matebeleland of Zimbabwe and Swaziland in friendly matches.

Lekan however, said they are faced with the challenge of not being able to raise the amount they need to host a successful event. He said sponsors have not been forthcoming saying they have only managed to raise P900, 000 of the P1.5 million needed. The rugby boss said their doors are still open and appealed to the corporate world to come to their aid. The competition that will be used as a World Cup qualifier will feature hosts Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mauritius and Zambia.
