Team leaves for CUCSA Games

The Games will run from July 16th to 20th. The team hopes to return with at least 56 medals from the competition where colleges and universities from nine southern african countries will battle it out. Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Angola and Swaziland will join the hosts, Namibia, for the five-day competition.

Team Botswana, under the Botswana Tertiary School Sports Association (BOTESSA), will compete in football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, tennis, chess, netball, karate and athletics. Except for karate, netball and athletics, athletes will compete in both female and male categories. The general team manager, Mosalagae Moalosi, has expressed his confidence in the team. He said, while the absence of South Africa is a blow to the competition, it will also be an opportunity for Botswana to target the top spot. Botswana has always played second fiddle to South Africa. Moalosi said the local team is a strong side considering that team selections were done very rigorously. He explained the medal target (56) is most realistic because Botswana has a history of doing well at the competitions.

Team Botswana is sponsored by Boyz Men, Department of Teacher Training and Development, Ministry of Health and the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC). There will be a sending off ceremony held for the team tonight at the University of Botswana VIP Lounge.
