UB student dies in road mishap

Tutume Station Commander Vusimusi Jorowe said that the police were investigating the accident that happened at 10 in the morning by Ntondola Lands about 10 kilometres from Nshakashongwe.

'A mini-bus carrying 16 passengers was driving from Maitengwe to Gaborone when its driver seems to have lost control and overturned leaving several people injured.  The driver had a special permit to carry people from Maitengwe to Gaborone,' he said. He said that the mini-bus was overloaded; it had 18 passengers instead of 16. However, four passengers suffered serious injuries, 14 suffered minor injurues and one fatality.

He told Mmegi that a 21-year-old young woman, who was a second year student at UB, was rushed to Tutume Primary Hospital where she was certified dead minutes after arrival.  He said that four passengers who suffered serious injuries were referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.  Jorowe advised motorists returning from New Year holidays to drive safely and avoid overloading.

Still in Tutume, the police recorded three cases of intimidation and threatening another person's life. 'These cases involve young people threatening elders, especially cohabiters and lovers,' he said.

The local police chief added that during the festive season people generally behaved well and that so far in the New Year the police have recorded only one accident in their jurisdiction.
