Masisi threatens to seal plots without standpipes

Addressing a Kgotla meeting at Monarch Customary Court here yesterday, Masisi said people who cannot afford to connect water to their plots should approach the council for assistance before the end of April.He encouraged the residents to develop their plots. 'We want our location to look smart,' he said. 'Gone are the days when you could find water flowing in every corner of the street in Monarch.  'That was what we were trying to solve when we stopped public standpipes and left only a few for those could not afford to connect water to their plots.'

Masisi said pit latrines should also be eliminated and replaced with a sewage system. 'My wish and responsibility is to bring development to Monarch,' he stated. 'We have improved a lot, though. Roads in Monarch are up to standard and there are streetlights everywhere.'

Masisi appealed to the people of Monarch to embrace self-reliance and to do away with handouts. To that end, he encouraged them to take up backyard gardening because it had improved livelihoods. He said a community centre was due for construction in Monarch West and that it would help keep the youth off the street and reduce crime.
