Thugs grab P100,000 from Meriting Spar

Central Police Station commander Superintendent Mokuedi Mphathi told Mmegi that they are investigating a case of burglary and theft.

The thieves cut off a padlock from the supermarket's rear door to force their way into the supermarket after hours, and snatched the day's collections from the safe.

'At the moment, we are not certain how much was stolen and we can only rely on an estimated amount of over P100, 000 but investigations are ongoing,' said Mphathi yesterday.

The police have so far questioned two men in connection with the incident.

'One of them is a senior employee while the other is a security guard who was on duty at the time. We are questioning them so that they help us appreciate what could have happened,' he said. He stressed that by questioning the duo, it did not necessarily mean that they were the perpetrators of the crime.

However, Mphathi indicated that his officers suspected the robbery was an inside job because the thieves seem to have used keys to open the safe.

'The duo, who are assisting the police, are currently in custody pending further investigations.'

Contacted yesterday, Meriting Spar management would not comment.
'We would rather leave everything to the police. Yes, we were hit last Tuesday,' said managing director, Archie Mbakile.
