Imports standards to be put in place

Marobela said the regulations are still at final draft stage at the Attorney General's Chambers. She said the regulations are meant to monitor the quality of imported goods in the country.

'There should be some form of mechanisms to stop some goods coming to the country,' she advised.

She also explained that they want to encourage local companies to use standards to benefit themselves. Responding to councillor Sam Masunga who asked about the quality of condoms manufactured in Gaborone, Marobela said the manufacturers have approached BOBS to standardise them. She said the Ministry of Health (MoH) has a Condom Testing Laboratory. She said it was the desire of the ministry to transfer this facility to BOBS.

The councillor was informed that BOBS is an accredited institution with some international standards bodies.

One councillor had inquired about some ARV drugs that are said to be of poor quality. In response, Marobela said MOH through its drug regulatory unit would deal with such a problem whenever it occurs.
