Thirteen vie for Miss Gaborone title

The pageant is one of the numerous fund-raising activities being organised by Gaborone City Council (GCC) ahead of the city's 25th anniversary celebrations to be held at University of Botswana (UB) on August 11.  According to Thabang Mmolotsi, the pageant's coordinator, they selected the 13 contestants from more than 30 women from all over the city who had to answer a given question about Gaborone.

She said that they chose those who gave them good answers showing their understanding of the nation's capital city. 'When choosing our 13 contestants we were not only looking at their beauty, age and body shape but we also wanted someone who knew more about the city and its history,' Mmolotsi told Showbiz.

She said that this event comes once in a lifetime so it is important that they select the right people for such a coveted crown, as the queen would be accompanying the mayor on the big day.

Mmolotsi said that after being crowned, the queen would be expected to run some viable projects to boost the development of the city.

The master of ceremonies (MC) will be Thuto Pheto aka Melo of Prime Time.

'DJ Zoo, Kast, Mosako and the flexible boys and girls Flexi Ville will be entertaining the audience.

The girls will be sponsored by local designers namely Lesedi Matlapeng, Sweetie Lebelo, Lucia Matumba and Mos F Designs,' she noted.

Izzy Wear and Jolly Brand will sponsor the contestants with t-shirts and that their main sponsors Fair Grounds Holdings will be supporting them with the venue, Mmolotsi said.

Pearls and Lilies Salon will be responsible for the contestants' hair. The tickets will be sold at P150 (regular) and P250 inclusive of an afterparty. The pageant will start at 1900 hours.
