Moreover, Lobsec Alumni, as it is called, was established to help former students in need due to various social problems and life threatening diseases.
The group came into existence last year when the school celebrated its 40th anniversary. One of the founders Boitumelo Gaseitsiwe told The Monitor in an interview that they want to plant a seed of compassion, responsibility and respect in the student community and Lobsec alumni.
Gaseitsiwe, who graduated from Lobsec 30 years ago, said, 'Our children need us to help them discover their purpose because life without a purpose, passion and planning is like a ship without a destination.'
Asked what activities the group has held since its formation last October, Gaseitsiwe said they have contributed and will soon donate to two former students who are terminally ill. Though they have not met with the school administration yet, she said their intention is to visit the school every term in order to help guide and motivate students.
Gaseitsiwe, who is a principal education officer in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development's Curriculum Development and Evaluation, said the visits would also entail career talks. 'We intend to help those who did not make it to tertiary education to set up businesses,' she said, adding that there would be ample mentorship from the alumni as they are now professionals in various disciplines.
She added that the group's co-founder, Vincent Montsho is a seasoned businessman who owns Thai Coin Restaurant in the African Mall. They (alumni) also intends to help teachers with extra curricular activities and tutoring where possible in order to improve the school academic performance.
Gaseitsiwe has encouraged members of the community to make contributions in their respective areas, as government alone cannot educate this nation. Recently, the group delivered a motivational presentation at the central regional education pitso.
