Oteng wins Botswana gold at all africa games

Reports from Maputo said the 21-year-old looked fierce and never succumbed to the hostile crowd in Maputo winning all his bouts to clinch the gold.

The boxer from University of Botswana (UB) boxing club has been in fine form this year having clinched the Zone IV gold and doing well at the Africa Boxing Championships in July. Oteng is the reigning Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) boxer of the year and he was selected by the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) to be part a development programme dubbed 'Road to 2012.'

Meanwhile, the country's hopes for a second gold in boxing were dashed when another finalist Mmoloki Nogeng (60kg) settled for a silver after sustaining a shoulder injury in the finals bout. Gomotsang Gaasite (64kg) won a bronze medal as team Botswana was represented in all medal categories. The team returned home on Saturday evening as they prepare to get in camp for the upcoming World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Speaking to Monitor Sport about the team's achievement in Maputo, BoBA spokesperson Willoughby Kemoen said they were very satisfied as the team managed to reach the medal target set for the games as part of BoBA's two year strategic plan of 2010-2012

Kemoen congratulated the team for what he said was a great achievement and improvement from the 2007 AAG in Algeria where boxing got only two medals, a silver by Hebert Nkabithi and a bronze by Khumiso Ikgopoleng, the current senior team coach.
