BIHL launches Thomas Tlou Scholarship

The BIHL Thomas Tlou Scholarship will benefit talented young Batswana to pursue postgraduate studies at any university in the SADC region from 2012.

The studies will be in any discipline aimed at contributing to Botswana's socio-economic development.Presenting the scholarship, BIHL Chairman Doctor Happy Fidzani said this is part of the BIHL Group of companies' corporate social responsibility.

He said they have chosen to help in education development to carry on the historian and diplomat's work in the sector.

Fidzani said assisting an individual attain greater educational aspirations is an asset and helping a nation means building healthy governance, businesses, gender equality and ultimately a sound economy. 

'The scholarship will be awarded to only one candidate next year and the intake will be increased beyond 2012,' he said.

He added that the standard will be high and the selection process will be vigorous. 

'We are honoured to name this scholarship after Professor Thomas Tlou.

His passion for education and contributions to our society were the inspiration for coming up with the scholarship,' Fidzani said.

For her part Professor Sheila Tlou said her family is proud to be associated with the scholarship because it will give Batswana children a gift, which no one can take away from them. She encouraged women to apply in numbers for the scholarship. Professor Thomas Tlou's much celebrated contribution to the development of Botswana's education was summed up in one of his favourite quotes, 'with education you can never go wrong.' 

The announcement for applications and details of requirements for the BIHL Thomas Tlou Scholarship will be made in November 2011.
