On the night when Culture Spears was launching their new cultural music album, Kueletsane in Lobatse, it was Magdeline the Charma Gal who stole the limelight from what is supposed to be the project of the moment, and Culture Spears must be cursing.Since she started doubling up for both Culture Spears and performing as a solo artist, the light in complexion musician's profile has been rising and the traditional music group appears to be reeling under her big shadow.
With a heart-melting smile, Charma Gal charmed her way into the hearts of revellers who thronged the Ozone Club in Lobatse on Friday for the launch of Culture Spears' latest album. It was a night when revellers seemed to enjoy Charma Gal's flavours as she dished out a serving of, O Ile Dichabeng, which set the right tone for an interesting night-out. One of her hit songs, Chika Dance, shook even those who had tried to be stingy and remain outside the gates to start flocking into the arena.
But it was the track, Ke Sia Le Matebele, that really threw everyone into a frenzy. The night was supposed to belong to Culture Spears, but when the traditional dance outfit came on stage they could not create the same hype that Charma Gal had created.Kwaito hopeful Naize Bouy had just opened the stage when Charma Gal stepped up to fan the flames in a show that many had earlier thought would not live up to expectations.
Having shed a lot of kilos of late, Charma Gal is in great shape and even her slender dancers struggle to match her on the dance floor. Although the group's leader Kabelo Mogwe has continued to deny that their latest project was a far cry from the likes of Mmadikokwana and Kulenyane, the reception at Ozone told a story of a group steadily losing its grip at the top of the music ladder. While one would have expected the fans to go crazy at the sounds of the new songs it appears many were still keen on the old tracks.
