Form Four admissions out

A statement released by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development in Gaborone yesterday says the number represents a transition rate of 61 percent, an increase of 7 percent from last year.

In the statement, principal public relations officer, Nomsah Zuze said the cut-off point was set at 45.61 percent, which is an upper Grade C pass. This follows the overall performance of the just released 2010 JCE, which has shown a slight decline in the pass rate of 0.4 percent compared to the 2009 results.

From the summary of results, out of a total of 39,444 candidates who sat for the examination, 44 obtained Merit, 629 students passed with Grade A; 8,825 students passed with Grade B, while 19,902 obtained Grade C and 10,044 Grade D. The BEC summary reveals that out of the 44 students who obtained Merit, 11 are from private centres.

The examinations were written under difficult circumstances after teachers boycotted the invigilation, following an impasse with the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) over a working Memorandum of Agreement.
