BEC results show decline in performance

'The worst affected centres are those where union action was more pronounced. The delay in the submission of coursework also had a bearing on the outcome. For the future, it is clear that unless all parties work towards a common purpose, the results will continue to plunge,' the Minister of Education, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi wrote on her Facebook page before the results were uploaded on the net.

Over 29,000 students sat for the examinations, which were marred by controversy over invigilation and submission of coursework results. Government has since refused to set up a commission of enquiry on the conduct of the examinations as requested by Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Wynter Mmolotsi.

In his motion Mmolotsi argued that the conditions were not conducive for an examination. Even some MPs from the ruling party have admitted that the examinations were written under bad conditions but declined  to support calls for an independent enquiry saying they prefer the concerned ministry to do the evaluation. Meanwhile, the Teriary Education Fair commenced this week and already questions were being asked as to why the fair went ahead when results were not yet out.  At time  of going  to press all communications officers were not available for comment.
