EMG Gunners Start Rugby League In Style

The Saturday afternoon game was the first league game and the only game played in the northern region. The copper mining town-based EMG Gunners were crowned last year's champions and proceeded to play Hocks in the finals where they lost.

With the big names the Gunners fielded, they beat Tuskers to find one try after another. Tuskers finished last in the north league last season. Their supporters came in large numbers to cheer them on, despite their poor showing.

On a positive note, the Tuskers fielded mostly youngsters from their development team. The team's care-taker coach, Godfrey Mhazo, said though his club was still struggling, it was not too late to develop his young players, hence using inexperienced players from the development team.

Mhazo said they were facing challenges from the north because most of the senior schools did not play rugby. 'Only Mater Spei College plays rugby, which is still not enough,' Mhazo lamented.

The Francistown-based Tuskers will try their luck next weekend when they welcome UB Rhinos from Gaborone. Gunners' coach, Gouws, said though they won, he was not impressed, because his side had too may mistakes in the first half.
