Setshwane has deputised Stanley Mwaanga, Stanely Tshosane and the recently fired Sikalame 'Six' Keatlholetswe at the club before taking the hot seat.
'We have confidence in Luis because he has been with this team for a long time. He has seen its ups and downs and has shown the will to go the extra mile when discharging his duties,' club spokesperson Philemon Mompati told Mmegi Sport.
He said that in the absence of Keatlholetswe last season, Setshwane took charge of two games and won them convincingly. 'Among other things, this has earned him the committee's respect. This is not a gamble as some people might look at it. We need to get back to the top but we do not necessarily need the so-called experienced coach to achieve that,' Mompati said.
He stated that if local coaches, Daniel Nare and Letang Kgengwenyane could manage Premier League clubs, then Setshwane is fit for the job. Mompati would not be drawn into discussing the reasons for Keatlholetswe's dismissal.
'We want to focus on giving our new head coach all the resources and support he needs,' he explained. He admitted that Mwaanga and Keatlholetswe could have failed because management did not do enough to help them succeed. He explained that the coaches had wanted to sign certain strikers but their wishes were not granted hence the goal drought at the club in the last three seasons.
He said that this time, management will do things differently and already the club has brought in strikers from Maun for trials. 'There are no quality strikers locally. That is why clubs continue looking outside our borders. I stand to be corrected because maybe there are some who have not been exposed. I believe we are still going to find ourselves going abroad for strikers because we believe it is time to wake up and reclaim our spot at the top,' he said. Mompati stated that their target is to win the league this season and their new coach has been given the freedom to choose his assistant coach.
