Sebote, the promising young poet

The young Sebote from Mannathoko ward in Serowe, has a rhythm of prose that is outstanding in a Standard Two pupil schooling at St Gabriel Mission primary. A well known volunteer in village events programmes, she has worked on poems that relate to issues on HIV/AIDS, education as well as the African child.

She has even done a poem on Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. At a donation ceremony held by the SOS Children's Village in Serowe in December last year Sebote eloquently delivered both Setswana and English poems, highlighting in both speech and gesture the effects of HIV/AIDS and poverty on the society especially children. For her efforts she was given cash gifts amounting to P300 from the guests.

In an interview, Sebote's grandmother Kebanyatse Sebote said she started teaching her granddaughter poetry at four years of age when she was still in pre-school at the Marang Day Care Cent. 'The young girl is very brilliant in poetry and she adapts easily to material she is given at any given time. People are happy with her as she delivers prose that has poetic quality,' she said.

At the event presents were donated to the children's home that came from companies such as Tati Nickel mine, Dikgang Publishing Company and the Serowe District office.
