Neighbour-hoods renamed

The decision was taken at a poorly attended kgotla meeting here this week Ikageleng kgotla. The meeting was attended mainly by the youth. A member of Ikageleng Ward Development Committee, Super Thipe, told the meeting that the committee was tasked by the leadership of Selebi-Phikwe to engage residents in the proper naming of the two wards in order to discontinue the technical names used for planning purposes.

Other names suggested for Phase One were Letsweletse, Tshwaraganong, Banamodi, Seriti, Tapologong, Ikageleng, Moepong and Pudulogo while Lethabile, Mophane, Thatogang, Kutlwano, Metsing, Phodiso, Same and Mokomoto were suggested for Phase Two. Some of the residents felt that the names should not be changed.

Peggy Kenosi argued that the naming of the wards should not be done in the absence of elders, saying the meeting was not well publicised. 'You should have written invitation letters because the public address system is not enough,' Kenosi said. 'Naming the wards is a serious matter that needs elders who know the history of the place.  Meanwhile, Thipe told the meeting that the Ipelegeng Programme would be hiring 10 supervisors and 250 labourers for the two wards and Kopano today (Thursday).

He said people should come in large numbers to try their luck. 'You must also assist us to hire people who are not ill because in the past we had a case in which a mentally retarded person was hired,' Thipe said.  'Such kind of people put us in danger and it only through your assistance that we can avoid such situations.'  He also said there was no point hiring people who are not physically fit because they could not do heavy work like cutting trees down.
