Today is end of ploughing season for the south

The Ministry of Agriculture had extended the season for farmers in this part of the country by four days due to the recent continuous downpours that interrupted ploughing.

The principal agricultural information officer at MoA, Nathaniel Motshabi, said the extension followed numerous requests from farmers. 'Initially the closing date was January 31, but the ministry extended it by four days, which ends today,' Motshabi said.

The official closing date for farmers in the northern part of the country has not changed, he said.  'For areas north of the Tropic of Capricorn, the date remains February 15,' Motshabi said.

He advised farmers to plant early maturing plants to increase their yields. 'Farmers should consider hybrid crops because they mature earlier,' he said.

He also reminded farmers to notify extension agents of areas planted for 2010/2011.
