BMD all set for big congress

In an interview with The Monitor, BMD official responsible for mass mobilisation, Kabo Morwaeng said they are ready for the congress, which will be held this month-end at St Joseph's College, Kgale.

The congress was postponed after some of the constituencies requested for more time to elect their delegates.

Announcing the postponement, the BMD said of the 57 constituencies, only 35 had elected delegates. It was said the interim leadership felt that as a new and dynamic movement with a presence and support in every constituency in Botswana, the other 22 constituencies should be allowed time to select their representatives.

Morwaeng confirmed over the weekend that they are finally ready for the event, with food and accommodation all readily available to cater for the party faithful at the congress. 'Some members and friends of the BMD have donated cows and other stuff that we will need to make the congress a success. We are just waiting for the day,' he said.

He said ideally they would like to have all the 57 constituencies represented at the congress, adding that over the past weekend some more constituencies would have elected delegates.

However, he said it was not smooth sailing for the party, especially that they are a new party with some members who are unemployed with no reliable source of income. 'To come to the congress, especially for those in constituencies far from Gaborone will be very expensive. They may elect delegates, but they might be deterred by lack of money for transport. If the party had money this would not be a problem, but we will see what we can do,' he said.
