Chinese firms give Miss Botswana cash boost

Miles Nan, David Qiu, Hu Zhongwen and Chow represented Mileage Air, Whitacon, Hitecon and Gaborone International School respectively.

Speaking for the four companies at a press conference yesterday, Nan said that the Chinese companies support Miss Botswana on an annual basis as part of their social responsibility programme. 'The donation will enable the pageant queen to market Botswana's potential to the outside world through her presence at the international event,' he said adding that in their strong social responsibility programmes in Botswana, the Chinese community has been involved in various charitable activities that are tailored to improve the welfare of the Botswana society.

Wareus, who is leaving the country for China next Wednesday, expressed gratitude at the donation adding that the gesture will go a long way in facilitating her crusade at the global event. 'I am ready mentally and physically for Miss World, but I have not been ready in terms of preparation,' Wareus asserted adding that the donation came at the right time as she is going to be better prepared for the event.  She added that the Chinese were helping her out of their own goodwill, at a time when she desperately needed the money so as to be able to participate at the event. No former Miss Botswana before her has brought the crown home meaning that if Wareus beats other girls to win the coveted crown, she will be the first Motswana to do so. This year's Miss World pageant will be held on October 30 in Sanya, China.   Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar is expected to crown her successor at the end of the event.  Both the Miss Botswana organisers (Leap Frog and 63 Entertainment) and Botswana Council of Women (BCW) could not attend the press conference due to other commitments.
