Kgathi briefs media on constituency league

A statement from the ministry said Kgathi will brief the media on the constituency league 'and respond to widespread allegations that Botswana is threatened with a suspension by FIFA'.  The Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, David Fani, told delegates gathered for the association's general assembly last month that FIFA had threatened to ban the country if a resolution on how the league will be run is not reached. The constituency league is a brainchild of President Ian Khama.

The BFA has said that the league is disrupting the smooth running of mainstream competitions as players leave in droves to join it.

Fani has suggested that the tournament be run under the auspices of BFA but this has fallen on deaf ears.

Khama has defended his brainchild, arguing it keeps the youth off the streets and provides entertainment.

There are more than 1,500 soccer teams involved in the constituency tournament. However, reports are that FIFA has given the government and BFA an October 30 deadline to strike an understanding or risk a ban.  This might affect the Zebras' campaign in the qualifiers for 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
