What Happened To Beach Volleyball?

However, Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) vice president (technical) George Keotsene has said things are likely to change because the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) is toying with the idea of including beach volleyball in its calendar.

He said preparations by FIVB to recognise beach volleyball are at an advanced stage. He stated that the FIVB intends to run courses for member countries to drill them on beach volleyball.

Beach volleyball was introduced in the country in 2007. It was staged twice as a social event in 2007 and 2008 at the now closed Ozone Club in Gaborone but since then nothing much has been heard from the game.

Beach volleyball is similar to indoor volleyball save for the fact that it is played on sand and features only two players per team.

Keotsene said beach volleyball is good because it has a social aspect where non-volleyball playing people can play. Since there are no beaches in the country, BVF improvised by piling up sand at the venue for the unique event to go ahead as planned.
