Magowe demotion fails to happen

So there was no drama as anticipated at the just ended Mahalapye Sub District Council meeting where councillors were expected to pass a motion of no confidence on Magowe following his defection to the ruling party breakaway, Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).

'The only problem is that there is no Standing Order that we can use to pass a motion of no confidence on a councillor who chooses to defect to another party. It only applies when he fails to deliver,' said Galley Senai, Council Chairman.

Senai revealed that they caucused after the session to advise each other that they should be a responsible Council.

'I believe in principle than emotions. A sense of maturity must prevail.'

Senai said while the vote of no confidence did not occur it was clear during the meeting that councillors no longer want Magowe in that position as they feel betrayed by him.

SHOMA Regional secretary, Boniface Kenosi, said they are still in discussions over the model of approach to use to address the issue. 'It is not automatic that we can just remove Magowe from the position. There are things that should be done first,' he said. Kenosi added: 'What I know is that all is not well as electorates in Dovedale/Mmaphashalala ward are ready for him.' In a previous interview Kenosi indicated that they couldn't afford to retain a person in that senior position while they have lost confidence in him.

Magowe could not be reached on his mobile phone and he was said to have accompanied Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Peter Siele on a tour.
