Police investigate slaughter of a horse

That was enough to finish its life for its failure to listen to instructions given by the rider. The horse was found in the wee hours of the morning last weekend with its rider by its side, drunk and confused.

According to eyewitnesses, the man, who appeared mentally unstable, was apprehended by passers-by who later called the police.

The incident that occurred next to the bus rank of the dusty village left both passers-by, commuters, visitors and children alike shocked.

With blood oozing from the nostrils, head tilted, faeces escaping, it remained an ugly scene indeed.

While people gathered in amazement, others murmured and the rest kept quiet and just observed as they moved from side to side to view the dead horse from different angles.

Motorists parked their vehicles by the side of the road to catch a glimpse of the slaughtered animal. Consumers and street vendors alike left their route tasks for some minutes to go and have a look at the scene.  Those who spend the day drinking in the nearby shebeens by the bus rank came in large numbers to share a couple of jokes about what actually transpired between the dead horse and its cruel killer.

It was a sad ending for the innocent horse, killed for its failure to cooperate with its rider. True of false, such a sad ending touched the hearts, minds and souls of even those who have never ridden before.

A reliable source from the police admitted that they are investigating a case in which a young man is alleged to have killed a horse in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man, he indicated, was caught on the scene by passers-by before handing him over to the authorities. 'But we are waiting to take the man to hospital as he seems not to be well,' he mentioned.
