Police launch strategy on service delivery

Acting director of Transport and Telecommunications Branch, assistant commissioner Goboletswe Dimeku said that adoption of standards by government departments would enable them to identify where to start in moving towards efficient delivery as well as determining how much they have achieved.

'This therefore provides an opportunity to prioritize services, allowing them to focus their effort and resources on achieving the improvements needed for priority outcomes,' he said. The strategy was launched for TTB and public relations unit of BPS.

He said that the Botswana Police should not remain behind when other government departments strive to improve services to their clients and should adopt changes and improvements that must benefit stakeholders and customers. 'The delivery of services must be provided in a caring, transparent, politically neutral, reliable, responsive, proactive and accountable manner and in partnership with stakeholders,' he said. Assistant commissioner Dimeku said that the objective of the strategy is to link the BPS day-to-day operations to its long term goals, thus enabling the organisation to function as a cohesive, dynamic and successful entity.

'It gives organisation and specifies what needs to be achieved and it is a process where policies, operations and resources are used to achieve the main objectives of the organisation,' he said.

The other intended goals of the strategy are to build and improve interrelations between managers and individuals, between managers and teams, as well as individuals.  The public relations officer for the police, assistant commissioner Christopher Mbulawa appealed to officers to enforce laws even when they are off duty. He gave the example of a police officer witnessing a motorist driving through a red traffic light, saying they should either talk to the individual to show them their wrong, or take him to the nearest police station.

He said that it would be wrong for the police to witness a crime being committed and sit back just because the crime does not fall under their respective departments. Mbulawa said all this should be done with respect to members of the public.
