'Jr' Kalafatis in run-in with cops

According to a source in the Botswana Police Service, Costa Kalafatis was having fun with friends at the 'African Mall' in Extension 4 on September 25 and after taking quite a good number of drinks, they had a quarrel. It is said that they later went to Kalafatis' home whereupon arrival he went inside a house to bring out a firearm. 'He fired four shots but nobody was injured,' the source said. It is not clear how many people were in his company and the kind of firearm he was using. He went into hiding for days until he surrendered himself to the police on Monday. He was detained and later released.

Police public relations officer, Assistant Commissioner, Christopher Mbulawa, confirmed that police arrested Kalafatis on Monday saying their investigations were continuing.

He would not disclose any information on the shooting incident saying only that the young Kalafatis is facing charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

The Kalafatis family attracted public attention after John was shot by government security agents in May 2009 at a shopping complex in Gaborone.

It is alleged that the security agents showered the unarmed man with a hail of bullets at the scene until he was dead.

Four soldiers are before the High Court in Lobatse facing murder charges, something which has irked their colleagues who argue that they were on duty and acting on instruction.
