BURS auditors camp at Dada's Motor Centre

A reliable source has revealed that the officers knocked on the doors of the company on Tuesday or Wednesday this week and they will only leave once they are satisfied with the books.  But there are allegations that Dada was not in a welcoming mood when the guests arrived at his offices. One employee of the company even alleged that their boss felt the officers were trespassing.

Contacted for comment, Dada was surprised that the officers felt unwelcome to his premises yet they are always allowed to inspect books. 'I have no problem with them and I'm surprised that you called me,' he said. He added that the auditors have done the inspections before and he has never had any problem with them.

General Manager of BURS Compliance Department, Kaone Molapo, would not confirm or deny that BURS auditors were busy inspecting Motor Centre books. All he could say was: 'All taxpayers are protected by the law so we cannot divulge any information to a third party. Go and talk to your sources'.

He added that it is part of their daily duty to inspect company books and they are not obliged to share information about which companies they are auditing.Motor Centre is one of the first Toyota dealers in Botswana and has supported the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) during their campaigns. Dada is the treasurer of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party. He has other investments in the lucrative poultry sector.

BURS recently embarked on a campaign to 'smoke out' companies that are not complying with tax laws and the agents have raided a number of companies in Gaborone, Mogoditshane and Tlokweng. In some instances they have confiscated goods and shut down business premises.
