Chinese companies in P20bn govt projects

 

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Gaborone on Monday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BEDIA, Jacob Nkate said that China is a growth area for economies of the world since the Chinese market is a big one that cannot be ignored.

He further said that as the memorandum bears fruits, he hopes to see Botswana companies selling their products to China and China investing in Botswana.

Nkate said since his visit to China with the Vice President, there have been tangible results reflecting the growing relationship between the two countries.

 BEDIA Business Development Director Flavor Marebole said that China stands to benefit by investing in Botswana because of the friendly business environment as well as government support.

'Currently, there are 24 Chinese construction companies involved in major government projects at an estimated total cost of P20 billion. 'Bokamoso Private Hospital, Sir Seretse Khama Airport expansion Project and the Lobatse stadium are some of the multi-million Pula institutions that were built by Chinese companies operating here in Botswana,' he said.

 In his presentation to the Chinese delegation, Gabolekwe Tlogelang from the Ministry of Health said that they are currently looking for companies that manufacture pharmaceuticals.

He pointed out that Botswana has a shortage of diagnostic labs and as a result, a significant number of samples end up being taken to neighbouring South Africa. Among other issues, Tlogelang touched on Botswana's need for health care specialist services as well as the need to train more health care professionals.

Representing the Education hub, Bridgett John said that they are working on positioning Botswana as a regional centre of excellence in terms of Education.

John explained that they are trying to find other alternatives to sustain the country's economy apart from mining.

Targeted areas that she highlighted are tourism, hospitality and management as they have the potential to grow further. John pointed out that the aim is to ensure that education in Botswana is of international standards.
