Mzwinila brothers to lead evidence today

Michael and Edward Mzwinila were jointly charged with their mother Elizabeth Surtee and their aunt Maureen Moseki, who have both been discharged and acquitted for lack of evidence linking them to the crime. The quartet were charged with armed robbery in which Bank of Baroda lost P1 million and in the process the bank's Managing Director Kadayam Ramasubramoney was threatened with violence.

Moroka acquitted Surtee and Moseki after the state called the investigating officer, James Baakile, to give evidence.

When they invaded Bank of Baroda, the prosecution alleges, the four accused and others not before the court used or threatened to use violence on Ramasubramoney and other bank employees.

The case was first heard in April 2003. A series of arrests, arraignments, bail applications, violations of bail conditions, escapes from custody, failed extradition proceedings, bail cancellations, contempt-of-court applications and postponements followed.  The acquitted women, Moseki and Surtee, were represented by Duma Boko.
