Botswana's human development improved - UNDP flagship 2010 report

Botswana is reported to have made striking progress in all non-health measures of the Human Development Index (HDI), e.g., per capita income, education, access to basic services such as water and sanitation.

However, the health related component of life expectancy, fell sharply from 65.3 years in 1991 to about 55.5 years in 2010.

This year's human development report entitled The Real Wealth of Nations: Pathways to Human Development, commemorates the 20th year of publication since the inception in 1990.  'People are the real wealth of a nation.'With these words, the 1990 HDR began a forceful case for a new approach to thinking about development: to create an enabling environment for people to live long, healthy and creative lives.  In keeping with the HDR's 20-year tradition, HDR 2010 presents agenda setting data and analyses on an issue of great relevance to the contemporary development discourse, The Real Wealth of Nations.

The analysis presents the case that it is imperative for attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  Like its predecessors, this edition focuses on a contemporary development issue, providing new perspectives and real options to policy makers.
