First WASBO Day to be held tomorrow

Through the event, WASBO intends to appreciate and encourage women participation in sports.

WASBO holds the event soon after local female runner, Amantle Montsho, recently won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in India last month.

WASBO spokesperson, Game Mothibi, said there will be health lessons for women during the day. She said the day is open to men as they want them to see how women in sport are doing. Mothibi encouraged those who will attend the event to put on different attires to reflect Botswana's diverse sports codes.

There will be presentations and words of motivation by veteran sports women. Mothibi said since the formation of WASBO, women participation in sports has increased though the numbers are insufficient. She said WASBO intends to come up with more strategies to attract women to sports.

Mothibi explained that women have more social barriers that stop them from participating in sports. 'I do not think there is any oppression from men as people think sometimes,' she said. She said when sports started, it was known to be a man's domain and that is why there are few women in sports.

'We are trying to come up with ways that will help women balance social issues with sport,' she explained. She said they are currently compiling data to see how many women are in sports compared to men. She said plans are in place to have women participating in male-dominated sports like boxing.
