P1.3 million for Phikwe sports development

The project will provide courts and equipment for different sporting activities in the mining town.

The work will start next January. Deputy mayor, Batlhaedi Mponwane, said the project is expected to change the image of the town.

He told a full council session on Wednesday that government has allocated funds P30 million for upgrading sports facilities and procurement of sporting equipment for primary schools in Selebi-Phikwe.

Mponwane said a needs assessment is in progress and implementation will commence as soon as project planning is complete.

'Participation in sports must be encouraged at all times.

Sport has been instrumental in building nations as it has the power to bring people together,' he said.

However, he regretted that people vandalise infrastructure provided by government for the betterment of the livelihoods of the people of Selebi-Phikwe.

He said children's playgrounds in the town are continually being vandalised and close to P20 million has already been spent on refurbishing and repairing the facilities.

He said vandalism has extended to the local sporting grounds.

He appealed to residents to be custodians of the facilities.
