Pohamba commends Botswana for health care programme

Pohamba, who was accompanied by President Ian Khama as well as other dignitaries, described Bokamoso as an institution that will ensure Botswana remains a healthy and productive nation.

Health Minister Dr John Seakgosing said the hospital is a welcome development that will improve the healthcare of the people.

The health care facilities offered at this institution include cardiac care, orthopedics  and oncology (an area of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of cancer).  The facility also houses eight operating theatres as well as radio and pathology laboratories.

Batatu Tafa, chairperson of the Bokamoso Private Hospital Trust explained that the hospital has a bedding capacity of 200 beds that can exceed 300 depending on the demand for health care. About 30 beds are also available for a rehabilitation centre.

She said patients no longer need to be referred to South Africa for services that were previously not available in the country before the establishment of Bokamoso.

Bokamoso is a P700 million institution that was established to improve health care as well as help in decongesting health facilities in and around Gaborone.

Owned by the Bokamoso Private Hospital Trust consisting of Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOMAS) and Pula Medical Aid Fund (PULA), it is built on 13 hectares of land in the Kweneng district just along the Molepolole road in Mmopane.

The institution, which started operating in January this year, has since established relationships with organisations in the United  States of America, such as John Hopkins University in Baltimore as well as the University of California in San Francisco.
