BDP hires PR manager

BDP's first PR manager is Gaborone-based attorney, Segaetsho Garekwe, whose appointment takes effect from May 1. Until his appointment, Garekwe was the BDP National Elections Strategy Team (NEST) coordinator.

'As a party operative, Garekwe has the knowledge and history of the party and is better placed to explain a lot of issues about the party to interested parties,' said Serema.

He indicated that the BDP secretariat is adopting the Botswana corporate governance structure in its endeavours to serve its clientele effectively.

'The media is becoming an important sector and we now need someone who is dedicated to deal with issues of the media on a daily basis,' explained Serema.

Garekwe is expected to play a crucial role in establishing the PR department, which he will manage immediately after it has been set up.

Speaking to Garekwe yesterday, he confirmed his appointment saying that the party will soon make the appointment official.

'Indeed that's true, I have been appointed the BDP PR manager and I will be working with you as soon as I am established,' he confirmed yesterday.

Serema has also indicated that it is time for the party to move its office to a more visible location in town so that those doing business with them can easily reach them.

The party secretariat is expected to hold a press conference shortly to introduce its new department and its new players.

The PR section will be crucial to the BDP at a time when the party is grappling with issues of a breakaway party, Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD). There is general confusion in the party as it is not yet clear who is leaving the party and who will be remaining.
