BoBA to launch newsletter, hold awards tonight

BoBA will also launch its newsletter at the same function. The night will see top performers rewarded as Boxer of the Year, Junior boxer of the Year, Referee of the Year, Affiliate/club of the Year, Judge of the Year, Coach of the Year and the Executive committee Special Award.

BoBA development officer Healer Modiradilo told Mmegi Sport that they decided to have the awards as separate events on their calendar in order to recognise best performers. He said the awards are meant to motivate boxers. He said in the past, they used to have the awards at the end of the Best of the Best tournament, but they felt they were not given prominence, hence the decision to hold them as a separate event. Modiradilo expressed hope that the awards will keep growing and in years to come as they will try sourcing sponsorship. This year, the awards do not have a sponsor.

Meanwhile, the association continued with its series of inter-club tournaments over the weekend at the Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) in Mogoditshane. More than 10 clubs participated in the tournament where a total of 24 bouts were fought late into the night.

The highlight of the day was in the 60kg category where national team mates Moeti Jonas of Kgalagadi Sands Boxing Club (KSBC) and Mmoloki Nogeng of Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) were trading punches.

The fight kept the crowd on their toes as the two pugilists exchanged powerful blows. At the end, Jonas's blocking ability made sure he won the fight 14-4 as he avoided many of Nogeng's punches while scoring crucial points.

In another exciting bout, Oratile Segokgo of DTCB fought Rasesa Onalenna from Francistown Boxing Club in the 64kg category. The evergreen Segokgo's powerful jabs seemed too strong for the man from the north, but he managed to stand his ground until the end of the fight, which Segokgo won 14-8.

In the 51kg category, veteran Thato Batshegi of Jwaneng Boxing Club was up against Kgageng Kgageng of SSKB in a fight that could have gone either way as the boxers possessed equal strength and tactical ability. In the last round, Batshegi came throwing an avalanche of punches on Kgageng to win the bout 7-4 on points.

Oteng Oteng of Tsholofelo had an easy task as he faced youngster Dimpho Ramokoya in the 51kg category. The 19-year-old Ramokoya retired at the beginning of the second round, as he could no longer take the heat he was exposed to from his opponent.
