TEC focusing on quality education - Molutsi

Speaking at a press conference held at Boipuso Hall in Gaborone on the eve of the Botswana Tertiary Education Fair 2010 (BTEF), the TEC executive Secretary said they have worked very hard for the past six years in establishing a system that would serve the country well. He said when they started, the institutions were totally inadequate and in shambles.  Molutsi said they have put in place a comprehensive regulatory system with all the tertiary institutions, under the authority of the TEC. He revealed that they have regulations that focus on the registration of the institutions while there are also regulations that are focusing on  the ongoing accreditation process for the programmes.

'Through the regulatory framework that we have in place we are working on improving and upholding the quality of programmes offered in these institutions,' he said.

He said the Botswana Accountancy College has  recently moved to the Ministry of Education, from the Finance Ministry as part of recommendations of the Tertiary Education (TE) Policy which aims to stop the fragmentations and bring all TEC registered institutions under one ministry. 'They are all gradually going to fall under the Education Ministry and very soon the Botswana Training Authority will BOTA be transferred too,' Molutsi said.

He explained that the existence of the TE Policy rationalises the institutions, so that Batswana can have relevant quality education. 'The Education Fair is one of its kind and brings under one roof for the first time in Botswana all tertiary institutions be they private or public to showcase what they have been doing and their programmes,' he said.

The objectives of the fair are to allow  students and parents access to information for different programmes offered in different TEC and BOTA registered institutions to help them choose which ones to apply for. 'We have managed to build a competitive TE sector and we encourage everyone to come and ask questions for themselves.

If there are still institutions which are inefficient, they will be exposed this week,' Molutsi said. The Fair will run from today untill Saturday at Ditshupo Hall in Gaborone.
