New UB admission system sparks congestion

After learning that besides qualifying for a programme of study, one also needs to arrive first and fill the application forms, hundreds of students rushed to the university yesterday.

Some of the students who spoke to Mmegi said they came as early as 2am whilst others said they came in the middle of the night.

'We came here at midnight but later the security guards told us to leave because we might be attacked by thugs,' said Mompati.

Another student disclosed that he had to seek accommodation from a relative on campus.

'But if you don't know anyone schooling here it's tough. I stay in Francistown and was forced to come here over the weekend and spent the night at a relative's place in Gaborone so I could get early and beat the queue.

Unfortunately I have not been able to submit the forms as I found a long queue,' said Meshack.

Meshack, who attained 42 points, said that he wants to apply for a law degree, but is afraid that by the time he submits his application all places will have been filled up.

'I heard that some people who got 36 points have applied and been given places on the course. I hope by tomorrow when I come back I will be able to submit and get admitted,' he said.

Another student, Dorothy, who attained 40 points, also hopes that she will get a place. She said she wants to apply for a Bachelors Degree in Accounts, 'but I am also thinking of applying to the Botswana Accountancy College (BAC),' she said.

Mmegi's attempts to seek comment from the UB management drew a blank as the institution's public affairs director was said to be in a meeting.
