Gabonamong eager to move on

Gabonamong, nicknamed Gino, has been a revelation since signing for the Cape club four years ago, and feels it is time to make a move. However, the Botswana international admits his fate lies with the club as he still has a year left on his contract.

'I have been at Santos for the past four years and I think I've done well for myself and the club. 'If things go well I may end up moving to another club although I still have a year to go with Santos. It will all depend on whether the club will be willing to enter into negotiations with interested clubs. But if that fails, I will have to stay until the end of my contract,' he told The Monitor Sport from his Cape Town base.

The Zebras' star added: 'Like any other footballer, I want to move to greener pastures. If I can get a deal abroad or a better offer here in South Africa, that will be fine.'

An industrious midfielder, Gabonamong won Santos' Player of the Year award for two consecutive seasons.  He attributes the club's fine run this past season, which ended on Saturday, to the fact they were under rated.

'Santos is not rated highly in this country (South Africa) but we can surprise many on a good day. We have a very good squad of mostly young players. Most of us have been together for four years and we now have a good understanding,' he said.

His focus is now on helping his club excel in this year's edition of the Telkom Knockout Cup where they play Kaizer Chiefs in the last 16 of the competition this weekend.

'Kaizer Chiefs are a good team and we respect them but we will also be out to fight to progress in the tournament,' Gabonamong said. Meanwhile, Gabonamong's teammate Boitumelo Mofoko is still nursing a toe injury he sustained late last year. The former Township Rollers' midfielder went under the surgeon's knife early last month and says he is on the path to recovery.
