GTC beauty programme proves popular

During the recent Botswana Tertiary Education Fair, beauty and hairdressing students from GTC practiced their manicures and pedicures skills on a willing clientele.

'We always get overwhelmed by many people when we attend events like this one, which is very good for our students as they get to practice more. It also gives the students and the programme more exposure,' said one of the beauty therapy lecturers Sylvia Nyandoro.

She explained that the current beauty class now has an open clinic at GTC where beauty and hairdressing treatment is offered at a reasonable price. 'The clinic opens from morning to midday on Thursdays and Fridays only. During this time students focus on practicals only and we normally get a lot of people because of our competitive prices, said Nyandoro.

'We have never advertised but people get to know through the word of mouth. We thought that if we advertised we would be overwhelmed by the large numbers,' Nyandoro said.

She said as a school they are more concerned about students honing their skills rather than the profit. 'We are not concerned about recovering costs but giving exposure to the students and for them to get more practice which is part of their training,' Nyandoro said.

She also expressed gratitude to the industry that normally takes in students for attachment. The GTC beauty and therapy programme currently has six lecturers trained in Zimbabwe, England and South Africa.
