Teams Vital To Goals BOCCIM Seminar

Speaking at BOCCIM's 4th Supervisors Forum in Gaborone last week, Boakgomo-Ntakhwana said successful teams are critical for successful organisations.

The two-day seminar was themed 'Building Outstanding Teams for Superior Delivery.' Its objective was to build teams that deliver and successfully achieve strategic goals aimed at enabling organisations to serve their customers better, especially in hard times like the current recession.

Boakgomo-Ntakwana pointed out that team-building exercises should always integrate the aspect of diversity.'Diversity in terms of cultures, values, upbringing and languages should be the building blocks of teams as members could harness each other's differences,' she said. 'In the process, a human resource-based competitive advantage can result.'  She also advised supervisors to recruit the right talent in order for their organisations to maximise productivity.  Boakgomo-Ntakhwana said the world has become so flat that competition for the best talent is not only local but has become more global.

'Management and the human resource level need to be upped so that you know the best players in the industry as that could help you know who to recruit,' she said.

But while human resource personnel are knowledgeable in their fields, they are often lagging behind in the commercial aspect of the business, she said. Boakgomo-Ntakhwana emphasised the importance of effective communication for achieving set goals.  She said visions, like brands, should be clearly communicated to employees and that there should be consistency and continuity in doing so. She said organisations should learn to have tolerance for risks (that go) with innovativeness.

Chedza Marobela of Local Enterprise Authority encouraged supervisors to create a motivational environment on order to enable employees to enjoy doing their work rather than working merely for fear of repercussions if they don't.

Presenting on the leading teams in (a) changing environment, Marobela appealed to supervisors to be trustworthy and to have empathy.  BOCCIM says the two-day seminar's theme - Building Outstanding Teams for Superior Delivery - was derived after a thorough audit of performance in the workplace
